One German Beer and Nine Becks Deep
By Max | August 29, 2008
I am waiting for my friend to arrive at the hostel. He is supposed to meet me here, but it looks like his plane is an hour late landing. As soon as he arrives we are going to reserve our ticket to Amsterdam and head out.
I didn’t accomplish much yesterday, except walking around exhausted and then taking a nap once my room was available. I did manage to eat a Frankfurter here in Frankfurt, which was one of my top priorities.
Last night started out well when I bought myself a German beer here at the hostel. It was pretty good. They gave us dinner, salsa verde, which wasn’t bad, but something I wouldn’t order on my own. Apparently, it is known around here for being Geothe’s favorite dish. I am going to have to read some Geothe (he’s a Frankfurter) now, because if that’s his favorite dish, he must write some really whacked out poems.
Things quickly progressed when the manager of the hostel showed up with a case of Becks and told several of us native English speakers to get started finishing the case. I am not sure how many I had, but let’s just say I pulled my weight in the case race. Actually, I may have been the only one racing. In any case, the manager soon revealed his motives behind the free beer when he pulled out a video camera and started taping us trying to say long-ass German words. In German it is gramtically correct to munge a word with its modifiers to create a really long word out of an English phrase. I wish I could write my word here, but it was about 50 letters long and theres no way I am going to remember that. It had something to do with demonstrating a tax reduction? The video isn’t up yet, but it should show up on youtube at some point.
I spent the rest of the evening with fellow hostellers hopping around to various pubs here in Frankfurt. The evening hit a low point when an Aussie and I started ordering Coronas of all things. Fortunately, our host quickly showed us how to order a German beer to recover. We joined forces with a New Zealander, an Irishman, and siblings from Michigan. I proceeded to demonstrate my cultural awareness by telling the New Zealander that everything I know about New Zealand I learned from “Flight of the Conchords.” While she looked shocked, the Aussie quickly agreed that was all one needed to know about New Zealand.
