Worst Olympic Sports Ever

By Max | August 24, 2008

I think I might be the only person in the world who thinks the Olympics are a big sham. Every four years we get to see what new and exciting sports the IOC can dream up to have people take seriously for the first time. The 2008 games consists of about 300 events spread across 28 sports. Let’s take a quick inventory of these.

Diving
Swimming
Synchronized swimming
Water polo
Archery
Athletics (track and field)
Badminton
Baseball
Basketball
Boxing
Flatwater canoe/kayak
Slalom canoe/kayak
BMX
Mountain biking
Road cycling
Track cycling
Equestrian
Fencing
Field hockey
Football (soccer)
Artistic
Rhythmic
Trampoline
Handball
Judo
Modern pentathlon
Rowing
Sailing
Shooting
Softball
Table tennis
Taekwondo
Tennis
Triathlon
Beach volleyball
Indoor volleyball
Weightlifting
Wrestling

Now out of that list, how many sports do people even care about outside of the Olympics?
Baseball, basketball, track, cycling, boxing, gymnastics, tennis and that’s about it. Seems like anything people are remotely interested in gets thrown into the games these days. Some of these sports are just ridiculous and I am surprised anyone even cares to watch them in the Olympics. I didn’t even know what Team Handball was before this year’s Olympics. Apparently it’s been included in the games for some time. I always thought handball was raquetball but without the racquet. Can you name even two of the events in the Modern Pentathalon. I sure can’t. Once you’re including table tennis, why don’t we go ahead and throw in everything. Olympic bowling anyone? How about Olympic beer pong?

For a real laugh, take a look at the sports which were once in the Olympics but have now been discontinued.
Basque pelota
Cricket
Croquet
Golf
Jeu de paume
Lacrosse
Polo
Rackets
Roque
Rugby union
Tug of war
Water motorsports

I haven’t even heard of half of these, but I bet “Jeu de paume” was a real fun game. Sounds like something the French just put in there so they could get an extra metal. The one real heart breaker in this list is the venerable “Tug of War”. What genius decided to put synchronized swimming in, but remove the Tug of War? I can’t tell you how much I would look forward to that every four years. I can’t imagine a better way to spend a Wednesday evening than to head down to the local sports bar and watch fat asses from around the world pull each other through the mud.

Guess what sport is being removed after 2008. Baseball… Well at least we still have badminton!

Nobody even cares about the baseball in the world, the world is not just USA.

I enjoy most of the Olympic games, and I really don’t like Baseball, and it’s not because it’s American but because it’s boring, on the other side I enjoy the American football, but it can only be played in USA because it’s so expensive for other countries to have football teams.

I’m really happy that they removed baseball.
