Dell Makes Linux Cheaper Than Windows
By Max | May 27, 2007
Ever wonder how much your computer would cost if you didn’t have to buy windows with it? Dell answered that question this week by offering a Linux installed PC alongside their current Windows offerings. Dell’s Linux sales page is here.
I went through an configured two equivalent systems except for the OS. One I configured with Windows, and the other I configured with Dell’s Ubuntu Linux offering. The XPS 410N is the Linux machine, and the XPS410 is the regular Windows PC. Its possible to save $50 by purchasing the computer with Linux preinstalled. Since the Ubuntu distribution is freely distributed, I can only assume that standard version of Windows costs $50 when ordered from Dell.
It will be interesting to see how many people will now go for the cheaper PC and buy Linux from Dell. I wonder what percentage of the people who purchase these systems will actually be just trying to get a cheaper computer, and then installing their friend’s copy on Windows on it. With all of the negative publicity surrounding Vista, I would guess than more than a few people will be doing this so that they can continue to use Windows XP and save some cash in the process.

Isn’t Dell a great company? I bet you are ready to run out to Walmart and buy a new one right now.

I wonder how much it costs Dell to support Ubuntu (or if Dell just dumps them off on the Ubuntu forums). Ubuntu is a very well made Linux Distro that should be an easy transition for Windows users.
I bet most users will stick with Windows. Anyone buying these Ubuntu systems is probably already a Linux user.

I agree. The number of people who will actually buy with Linux is such a small percentage of the total market share. Yet, there are still a lot of people out there who want it.

I bet most of the people who buy these systems will just grab their friend’s copy of windows and install that saving $50.

Don’t start giving people ideas that will lose Dell money.

I think it will be great for the overall adoption of Linux and open source systems. Sure, a lot of people will want to load up a pirated XP disk.
I bet you there will be a ton of people that either don’t know better, or are curious to see what it is all about (and keep the Linux OS).
