The World of Search Is Changing.
By Max | April 5, 2007
After doing some more reading about AfterVote or Younanimous or whatever you want to call them, I realized that this new development in search engines will change the way the internet is searched. I first read about something like this a few months back when the founder of wikipedia mentioned that he was going to start a user editable search engine. At the time I thought it was a good idea. Dan and the AfterVote guys have created the first version of one of these things that I have seen out in the wild.
The reason I think this approach will be so successful is simple. Porn! Have you ever tried looking for free pictures and videos of naked ladies? Of course you have. Blindly clicking on these sites which first pop up in the search engine results will place you smack in the middle of some awful porn pop up loop that is almost impossible to get out of. Now that real people are actually going to be suggesting sites to future visitors, these spammy sites are going to be blacklisted. After seeing how well this approach works for porn, people will turn to this type of search engine for their other searches. Did you know VHS originally gained popularity because all the hornballs rushed out to buy a critical mass of VCRs?
The only obstacle standing in the way of putting this into practice is creating a voting system that will keep armies of cheap overseas labor from being hired to vote for specific sites all day long.
